A Pig's Tale: Hog Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami-Dade Leader.
It might not have been at the equivalent scale as pardoning holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a prosperous future without fear.”
The event, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the current slang trend of young people shouting “6-7” – inspired by a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently named “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Peaceful Retirement
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to begin the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and based in heritage that unite the community. Every time, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
