'Living a Nightmare': Loved Ones of Unaccounted For Teens Await News After Ski Resort Inferno
The relatives of teens lost after a deadly fire at a bar in a Switzerland's alpine town are confronting an excruciating period of uncertainty for official news and pleading for information about their family members online.
The blaze devastated the Le Constellation bar in Cans-Montana, located in the mountains of the Valais region, in the small hours of New Year's Day. Verified video reveal the ceiling being engulfed in flames as bottles with fireworks are raised in celebration.
Emergency services have indicated that it could take considerable time to formally name the fatalities of the tragedy, which killed 40 people and injured another scores more. A spokesperson said on Friday that 113 of the injured have been accounted for, with efforts ongoing to name the remaining few.
In the waiting period, loved ones have been posting on the internet to request any news about their friends who were present at the venue that evening.
Heartbreaking Pleas for the Unaccounted For
The whereabouts of teenager from Switzerland Arthur Brodard, a teenager, are currently unknown, according to an appeal from his family.
The resident of Lutry near the city, explained to a local newspaper that she had returned to the city to see if he was in the hospital, while his other parent did the same in Bern, but was unsuccessful.
"This is a living nightmare, a nightmare. Either I find my son in the morgue, or I find him in intensive care. Words cannot describe it," she stated.
She explained that some of his companions had been discovered with injuries covering nearly half their bodies. "It's indescribable; they experienced an absolute nightmare."
The Italian foreign ministry has said that a number of of its young people have not been located.
Among them is Emanuele Galeppini, a 16-year-old sportsman, who hailed from Genoa but now residing in Dubai.
The Italian Golf Federation has said that he is no longer with us, without mentioning the tragedy, paying tribute to a "young athlete who represented passion and true sportsmanship."
His parent, is quoted as saying that his son was at the bar and was last heard from around the new year. An official spokesperson has stated that a official announcement of his death is awaited.
Additional Missing Individuals
Giovanni Tamburi, sixteen, is also unaccounted for. His mother explained that he had been on vacation but had ventured out with friends and found himself at the bar.
"A close friend said they fled after the fire broke out and that he had his phone with him, but then at a specific moment he couldn't see him anymore," she explained, adding he had been wearing a identifiable gold chain.
One of his teachers commented, "He was known for his kindness and positive demeanor, coupled with great responsibility. Every time offer to get me a coffee."
Alice Kallergis, who holds dual Greek and Swiss nationality but lives full-time in Switzerland, was also at the bar on New Year's Eve, according to reports.
Her sibling has published an urgent request on social media, saying the family has had "no updates" regarding the teenager or the group she was with, who are also reported missing.
Consular authorities from her other nation say they are continuing to monitor the developments.
