The most severe projected effects of the climate crisis for the UK have been outlined by experts, encompassing a searing 4C increase in temperatures to a two-metre rise in ocean levels. A separate possibility predicts a decline of 6C in temperature following the shutdown of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would severely impact agriculture and energy needs.
Possible Extremes, Not Forecasts
These impacts, a number of which are linked to irreversible climate shifts, are viewed as improbable but possible. The scientists said that these scenarios filled a gap in forecasting that had rendered the UK unprepared for catastrophic possibilities.
"The climate extremes we have mapped are not forecasts, but they are possible," stated the lead researcher who oversaw the analysis. "The nation has been making preparations without the methods to assess extreme possibilities. We've now given decision-makers what they need to prepare for future conditions they hope never happen, but dare not dismiss."
A Spectrum of Harsh Climate Projections
A further series of severe models maps the potential extent of harsh climate between now and the close of the 2100s. These suggest that thermometer readings could soar in particular seasons by up to 6C higher than the norm, while rainfall could be triple standard measurements.

- Four-Degree Warming: Planetary heating soaring past 4C by 2100 could occur if emissions cuts collapses or if vicious cycles like the tropical forests becoming a net carbon source unleash its vast reserves of carbon. This would lead to intense and enduring heat domes and droughts plaguing the UK in summer.
- Ocean Circulation Failure: A major ocean current, the North Atlantic current, is slowing down and becoming unstable due to climate change. A full shutdown starting around 2030 would lead to a 6C cooling in the UK. "Crop production would be severely challenged and freshwater availability would be completely altered," noted the professor.
- Rapid Sea Level Rise: A increase of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could occur if ice sheets in the polar regions melt abruptly, flooding low-lying areas. Differing from the other scenarios, this risk is already known by planners.
