UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller Merging Silent Hill and Among Us Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a young woman harboring several human souls inside her must escape from a maze of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Inside her reside four distinct personas, all possessing unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can take over at will, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie medical facility, though additional clips depict the protagonist navigating a abandoned chapel.
A World of Personal Dread
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to others can activate something primal within us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The core gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these souls will switch against your will during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the girl one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers where their heads are. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players believes a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The last one remaining could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
